DSB (Danish State Railways) and a small number
of private railway companies cover the country with
a dense network of train services supplemented by
buses on quieter stretches.
Traveling by train in Denmark is an efficient and comfortable way to get from one part of the country to another. On most of the longer sections the train is faster than going by car or plane. Hourly services of modern InterCity trains connect Copenhagen (København) and Zealand (Sjælland) with the main towns, and three times per hour a train leaves for Odense on Funen (Fyn).
The InterCityLyn trains reach Aarhus from Copenhagen in less than 3 hours and Odense is only 1¼ hours train journey away from Copenhagen.
Regional trains link local and rural halts all over Denmark. In most Regional trains it is possible to bring bicycles.
S-tog (S-trains) is the rail service of Copenhagen.S-trains run every 5 to 10 minutes during the day and at longer intervals in the evenings.
InterCity (IC) is the backbone of Denmark’s national railway service. InterCity calls at most main city stations every hour. As a rule Inter City links Zealand, Funen and Jutland, starting and ending in Copenhagen. InterCity lets you choose between second class and first class accommodation. Second class includes only the trip and offers no additional service but on most trains trolley service of snacks, drinks and confectionery is available. First class is the more sophisticated choice with extra service included. A complimentary buffet with coffee, tea and soft drinks is at your disposal and you are served crusty roll or a cake.
InterCityLyn is a fast train with fewer stops. On InterCityLyn you can choose between second class and first class. From 1st January 2007 new high quality trains (IC4) will gradually run on the main sections.
No reservations are required for the use of InterCity
and InterCityLyn trains. However a reservation is
recommended during peak periods.
Fixed link for the Öresund Region
Traveling time between Copenhagen and Malmö
(in Sweden) is about 35 minutes. The specially
designed Öresund Trains will cross the bridge every
20 minutes. The Öresund train runs the whole
way round Öresund from Helsingør (Elsinore) in
Denmark via Copenhagen and Malmö (Sweden) to
Helsingborg and other cities in Sweden.
Airport
Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup
Most international flights to and from Denmark arrive and depart from Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup. Trains to Copenhagen Central run every 10 minutes with connections to the rest of Denmark. The journey only takes 12 minutes. From early morning to late evening passengers can get to and from Copenhagen Airport to and from the rest of Denmark
SMOKING
No smoking on the S-trains in Copenhagen and surroundings. On all other trains smoking is allowed on about 25% of the seats.
