The railway network of Serbia covers 1600 kilometers (1100 miles) , connecting large cities to small towns across the country.

Besides traveling within the country itself, the railway lines of Serbia have over 40 international trains traveling to and from its neighboring countries. The capital city, Belgrade has regular and direct rail connections with capital cities in Central and Eastern Europe. On the ŽS network, international passenger trains include a regular day and night train, the “Avala”, which circulates on the route Belgrade - Budapest - Vienna, and offers customers, disembarking in Budapest and Vienna, connections to the rest of Europe. There are also international day and night trains running from Belgrade to Kiev to Moscow, and vice versa, and from Belgrade to Zurich, Munich, Ljubljana, Bar, Banja Luka, Sofia, Bucharest and Thessaloniki, running in both directions. From Belgrade to the towns of Sremski Karlovci, Smederevo, Vrsac, Vrnjacka Banja or Palic you can travel in a nostalgic, traditional style with the steam engine “Romantika”. Additionally, there is a steam train at Sargan Double Loop. This makes up a part of an old narrow-gauge railway line which has joined Visegrad with Uzice since 1925.
