Efficient -reliable- scenic: the airport gateways at Zurich and Geneva are directly connected to the main Swiss railroad network - some 5000 km (3100 miles) in length and the densest transport network in the world.
Efficiently organized and developed, the Swiss Transport System guarantees in most cases very short waiting times when changing trains.
“A train an hour” applies for all major destinations.
Trains are well equipped, and many carry dining cars or beverage trolleys. Beside the train network, an extensive bus network carries tourists in comfort to remote regions and nearby locations.
Crossing a mountain pass by bus ranks among the world’s most exciting experiences.
Some 500 funiculars, cable cars and other means also make Swiss excursion destinations accessible.
Arriving by plane? Luggage claiming at Swiss airports is not necessary. Passenger arrivals at Zurich or Geneva Airport can check baggage from their departure airport straight through to many Swiss destinations. Baggage will be delivered direct to the required railway station to be picked up. Returning air travelers can mail luggage directly to their home airport from some railway stations. Confirmed air tickets and train tickets should be shown.
Arriving by train? There are many international trains that connect the European countries to Switzerland:
- TGV runs from Paris direct to the Swiss cities of Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Neuchâtel and Zürich. In winter, one TGV every Saturday connects Paris with Brig and the ski fields of Zermatt and Saas Fee.
- The ICE connects Frankfurt, Hamburg and Berlin to Basel, Zurich, Bern and Interlaken in the Jungfrau Region
- The Cisalpino will shorten traveling time to and from Italy (Milano, Venezia, Cinque Terre, La Spezia) with connections to Lausanne, Geneva, Basel, Bern, Brig and Zürich/Stuttgart.
- Various night trains (“EuroNight”, “Talgo pendular”, “CityNightLine”) with modern standards and high service quality connect Switzerland with cities like Vienna, Rome, Hamburg, Berlin, Amsterdam, Dresden and Barcelona.

Taking a night train lets passengers enjoy a comfortable sleep and arrive well rested at their destination in the morning, ready for a day of sightseeing. And every hour or half-hour, air conditioned Intercity trains with dining cars, mini-bars and children’s playroom cars bring passengers to all Swiss cities from where numerous regional trains bring you to lovely villages in maxi-comfort.
For tourists, the journey itself is often the objective. The Swiss Transport System is based on this idea, to let traveling become an experience.
