Using the Eurail Pass in 5 Steps
Step 1 – Before making the first train journey, the traveler must go to a train station ticket window to have the ticket activated. (See Conditions of Use, article 2)

Step2 – The Eurail Pass consists of a travel ticket and the Pass Cover. The traveller must first fill in the ticket and the personal details on the Eurail Survey form in the Pass Cover.

Step 3 – If the Traveler has a Eurail Pass with flexible travel days ( Flexi Pass). On each day of travel, the date must be filled in the Travel Calendar on the ticket with a pen. ( See Conditions of Use, aricle 3)

Step 4 – Before boarding each new train, bus or boat, the traveler must fill in the Travel Report present in the Pass Cover. Without this step the Pass is invalid. ( See Conditions of Use, article 5)

Step 5 - Once the trip is finished, the Eurail Survey form should be send to Eurail Group G.I.E. ( no stamp required). In return the traveler will receive a gift.

Eurail DocumentationPasscovers, Eurail Timetable and Eurail Travelers' Guide 2010
Each traveler buying a Eurail Pass must receive a Eurail Traveler’s Guide, Eurail Map and a Eurail Timetable. These documents form an integral part of the Eurail Pass and must be handed out free of charge with every Eurail Pass.

TIP: Encourage your customer to read carefully the Conditions of Use in the Eurail Traveler’s Guide

Validity period of the Pass
Travel with a Eurail Pass should never begin before the 1st day of validity (00.01 hours) and must be completed by midnight of the last day of validity of the Pass (24.00 hours). (Conditions of use, article 7)
Travel with a Pass with flexible travel days
Most Eurail Passes have flexible travel days. These Passes will have a calendar printed on the Pass and the traveler has to fill in his or her travel dates on this calendar. This has to be done before boarding a train (or ship). The calendar box has to be filled in in sequential order for each travel day and it must be done in blue/ black ink or with a blue/black ball-point pen. Travel cannot begin before 00h01 on the first day of the overall validity of the Pass. For a trip on an overnight ferry covered by the Pass, the traveler may enter either the day of departure or the day of arrival. Use of a free benefit requires a travel day. The use of a reduction benefit does not require the use of a travel day.
Use of flexible travel days on an overnight train after 7:00 pm (19.00 hours):
For an overnight trip on a direct overnight train leaving after 7:00 pm the traveler must write the next day’s date in the corresponding box of the calendar; travel between 7:00 pm and midnight on the day of departure is then included. ( See Conditons of Use, article 4)
Travel with a Saver Pass
It is not obligatory for all persons listed on the control voucher to travel together; if only some of the persons listed on the pass make a trip, they have to carry the ticket and the Control Voucher with them. Note it is not permitted for anyone not traveling with the rest of the party to make another trip at the same time. ( Conditions of Use, article 11)
Activating a Eurail Pass
A Eurail Pass can not be used for traveling until the first and last day of validity, validating stamp and passport number are filled in on the Pass. This can be done by an agent, when issuing a Pass, but will generally be done after arrival in Europe. This is referred to as “activating a Pass”. Activation in Europe can be done by a railway official like a clerk at a ticket window or at a Eurail Aid Office. When the first trip originates in a non-Eurail country, the Pass may be validated on the train (by a ticket inspector of the country where the Pass is valid). (Se conditions of Use, article 2)
Benefits

In addition to rail travel, Eurail Passes entitle the client to several benefits like for example free or reduced transportation on certain shipping lines. Travelers can find detailed information in the chapter “Benefits” of the Eurail Traveler’s Guide. For Eurail Select Passes, Eurail Regional Passes and Eurail National Passes, which are valid in specified countries, the following rules apply:

  • For domestic transportation: the Pass has to be valid in the country in question.
  • For international transportation:
    • For reduced travel the Pass must be valid in the country of departure or the country of arrival
    • For free travel, the Pass must be valid in the country of departure and the country of arrival

Benefits can only be obtained through the company offering the benefit. Generally speaking this will be at a local ticket office, a call-centre or website.

Entitlement to use a Eurail Pass
A Eurail Pass is strictly personal and non-transferable As the name and passport number of each traveler appears on a Eurail Pass, it can only be used by the person(s) mentioned on the Pass. When using a Eurail Pass it is compulsory to show railway staff a passport or passport-replacing travel document upon request. Note that Eurail Passes may only be sold to non-European residents. (See conditions of Use, article 1
